Nuyorican Poets Cafe
I’ve always been a fan of live poetry and spoken word. I remember being in High School english and admiring those that had such great control over the english language. Using words to paint pictures, evoke emotion, and enlighten all through stylized literary technique is both a skill and God-given talent. Last friday some of my peeps introduced me to the Nuyorican Poets Cafe which, previously unknown to me, is a pretty well known spot among the poetry and creative writing crowd. The show we attended on Friday had a few featured artists and then a poetry slam in which poets competed to get a spot on the National Slam Team. The super laid back atmosphere, diverse crowd and display of raw talent was well worth the $10 admission. The host that particular night Mohogany Brown had jokes for days and kept things lively and fresh in between acts. There’s also a bar with $5 beers, (get a corona!) and $4 wine to quench any thirsts without having to exit the building. The show started at 10 p.m. with doors opening about an hour before. Be sure to get there early because there was a long line prior to showtime and all the seats fill up quickly! It’s located on 236 East 3rd street between B and C, that’s the lower east side of Manhattan. For more info and a calendar of events make sure you hit up Nuyorican.org.
